After having watched András Schiff’s fantastic masterclass on Janáček’s In the Mists, I was compelled to revisit the piano music of this unique genius from Moravia and share my favorite recordings.
Without doubt, Schiff’s recordings are some of the greatest modern recordings available. His knowledge of music’s architecture — he approaches making music like a composer, the true music makers — is unparalleled.
Another pianist who plays the music of Janáček with authority and insight Leif Ove Andsnes.
But the piano music of Janáček was for many years the sole purview of the great Czech pianist, Rudolf Firkušný. We have to thank him for being such a champion of this music during his incredible career.
