EDUCATION IS KEY

The arts, it has been said, cannot change the world, but they may change human beings who might change the world.

– Maxine Green

MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM

Our 2024-2025 Music in the Classroom series brought a string quartet of Las Vegas Philharmonic musicians to provide chamber performances for over 500 students at Berkeley Bunker Elementary School, a Title-1 school with 90% minority enrollment. This outreach program allowed the students of Berkeley Bunker Elementary a chance to interact one-on-one with professional musicians and experience hands-on musical learning, including how to hold and pizzicato on a violin.

As part of our ongoing commitment to building a stronger connection with the local community, we also extended an invitation to 4th and 5th grade students from Berkeley Bunker Elementary School to attend our April 12th concert featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. This opportunity allowed them to experience a live performance by the Las Vegas Philharmonic, as well as an extension to their in-class experiences.

K.O. Knudson Partnership

Thanks to the support of a generous private donation, we have launched a meaningful partnership with a Title I magnet performing arts middle school in Las Vegas. This school was thoughtfully selected for its diverse student population, strong commitment to the arts, and supportive staff and administration, all of whom share in our mission to improve access to music education and eliminate barriers caused by socioeconomic challenges.
As part of the partnership, we are providing new instruments, essential supplies, and funding for instrument repairs, ensuring that all students have the tools they need to participate fully in band and orchestra programs. In addition, two professional musicians from our organization visit the school each concert cycle to work directly with students, offering mentorship and expert guidance.
Notably, the school’s orchestra director, Lisa Ratigan, is a member of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, further reinforcing the shared values and high standards of this collaboration. Together, we are committed to fostering equity in the arts and inspiring the next generation of young musicians.

STUDENT LOBBY PERFORMANCES

Students from high schools across Las Vegas are invited to share their talents in the lobby of The Smith Center before our regular season concerts. These 45-minute performances offer audiences an enriching pre-concert experience with live chamber music. Past groups have included string quartets, flute choirs, jazz combos, and choirs, featuring students from schools such as Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, Clark High School, Nevada School of the Arts, and Southern Nevada Homeschool Performing Arts.
